Souvenances acadiennes de Tignish
The year 1999 marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of Tignish. In 1799, eight Acadian families left their homes in Malpeque to find a place where they could live freely. They found such a place, a place that we call Tignish today. The first families were soon followed by other people just as courageous and willing to make a new life for themselves.
This book of approximately 80 pages is divided into six distinct sections. The first establishes the historical context surrounding the foundation of Tignish. The second section presents these eight families and describes how they spent their first years in Tignish.
The third section deals with the institutions that supported the development of the Tignish area, especially the religious and educational institutions. Another section, entitled "Musique et son monde" (Music and its people), depicts the cultural life of Tignish at that time. The fifth section of the book deals with important individuals who contributed to life in Tignish and whose work has been recognized throughout Canada.
The sixth and final section includes a collection of various texts on events and happenings that have marked the life of the people of Tignish. The topics are presented in the form of short stories and are visually supported by old and recent photographs from numerous private and public collections.
