Update on New Construction

The demolition got started on April 7, 2006 when the Sports Association and volunteers removed the green steel siding, the glass around the boards, the ice surface lights and other items. By April 12, all this stuff, as well as, the Zamboni and canteen equipment were moved out of the Arena and either sold or stored at pre-arranged locations.

Bulldog Demolition were awarded a demolition contract of $65,500 plus GST to knock down the Arena and haul all the materials away. They started on April 13 and were finished by April 26th.

Tenders closed for the Phase 1 - Construction on April 19. This work would involve site preparation, footings and foundations, and the full outer shell of the new arena complete with insulation and exterior doors. This contract was awarded to Perry's Construction for $866,000 plus GST. As of April 20, 2006, the steel beams were ordered with a delivery date of early July. Perry's Construction is waiting on shop drawings for the steel before they can start site preparation and positioning the footings for the columns of the steel roof beams.

The next phase, including the dressing rooms, canteen, other rooms, electrical, mechanical (with plant room) and ice pad will be out to tender by the week of May 22, 2006 and will close by June 5, 2006

Perry's Construction has indicated they will be starting site work on June 5th 2006.

June 5, 2006 - Perry's Construction has started construction on footings and foundation for the outside wall of the Arena.

July 6, 2006 - The Footings and Foundation will be complete by Friday, July 7th. Perry's Construction is presently excavating the clay from around the sand base for the ice surface. After adding more sand to increase the length and width of the sand base (since the ice surface is increasing to 200' long and 85' wide), Perry's will replace the excavated areas that are left with the proper quality fill.
The structural steel is due to be delivered from Ontario between July 10 - 14th. The sub-contractor, Star Construction, will probably start erecting the steel by July 17th -(See page of Construction Pictures.)

The contract for Phase II - Constructon was awarded to Perry's Construction for $1,934,800 plus GST. Phase II includes all interior work.

Some sub-contractors are:

  • MCM Bricklayers Ltd. - Concrete Block

  • Summerside Industrial Fabricators - Interior Structural steel and other metals

  • CIMCO - Refrigeration (Ice Plant)

  • Red Isle Plumbing and Heating - Mechanical

  • Gaudet's Electrical Service - Electrical

  • The Paint Man - Painting

  • SEACOR – Dasher Boards

July 31 - Summerside Industrial Fabricators began installing steel beams between the columns to support the steel framework for the stands.
August 1 - Red Isle Plumbing installed the under floor sewer connections for dressing rooms.
August 2 - Maritime Electric installed a new electrical service from Phillip Street to serve the Arena and Legion. (Old service came in from Chruch Street across other properties.)
August 3 - Star Construction started erecting the steel siding and insulation on the east wall. The color of the steel side walls is bone white with some red (for farming) and blue (for fishing) on the front.
August 3 - Perry's Construction is constructing the Header Trench for the piping in the ice surface.
August 10 – Perry’s Construction started pouring the floors for the eight dressing rooms, all with in floor heating. Only six will be built now along the left (east) side. The remaining two will be built in future years.

The completion date is still set for October 31st. This means that the ice surface concrete has to be poured by October 1st, because the concrete has to set for 30 days before making ice.

  • August 17 – MCM started laying the concrete blocks for the dressing rooms.

  • August 23 – The roof is half covered.

  • August 23/24 – Perry’s Construction has completed the foundation in front as well as erected the two columns to hold the canopy over the entrance.

  • August 25 – Miscellaneous items – Red Isle Plumbing has completed the under the floor plumbing across the front for the dressing room, washrooms, and canteen. Gaudet’s Electric has installed the underground conduit for electricity and telephone from the Maritime Electric pole to the transformer pad and into the building. Perry’s Construction installed a new two inch water line to the Arena from the Municipal water System.

  • August 28 – Summerside Industrial Fabricators started to install support beams for the stands.

  • August 29 – Gaudet’s Electrical installed and powered up the parking lot lights.

  • September 7 – Cimco and Perry’s started to install the pipes, insulation, vapor barrier and rebar for the ice surface. Plans are to pour the concrete for the ice surface on Friday, September 15th.

  • September 8 – Cameron Masonry started their phase I work of erecting the concrete block wall across the front of the arena.

  • September 18 – The ice surface floor was poured today. Perry’s Construction and Summerside Industrial Fabricators continue to work on the stands. Perry’s hope to pour the concrete for the stands on September 21st. Star Construction is working on the canopy over the front entrance. CIMCO has completed the header pipes. They will be installing the two compressors, chiller, and condenser along with the necessary connections. Red Isle Plumbing and Heating are working on water lines to washrooms, canteen, and in-floor heating. They have to install two furnaces and two oil tanks. Gaudet’s Electric is setting up the electrical room inside the plant room. They’ll soon have power to various sections of the arena. Next big job is to install lights above the ice surface. The paint man should be painting the rafters within the next 2 weeks.

  • September 19 – MCM Bricklayers are finishing up the block walls around the Zamboni and other side rooms. They still have the Entrance and Canteen area to complete.

  • September 21 – Summerside Industrial Fabricators started working on the upper viewing room above the canteen.
Red Isle Plumbing and Heating are working on the two hot water furnaces.
MCM Bricklayers are laying concrete blocks for the canteen and elevator shaft.

  • September 28 – the exterior front is complete except for the glass and steel entrance, the roof fan for the canteen, some exterior lights, and the Arena name.

  • October 2 – The Paint Man started painting the ceiling and walls.
    - SEACOR began installing the Dasher Boards
    - Summerside Industrial Fabricators are installing the stairways up to the stands

  • Maritime Electric brought the power into the Arena’s Electrical Room on October 6 and dismantled the exterior temporary power pole on October 11.

  • CIMCO has connected the two compressors, chiller and condenser together. The chiller still has to be connected to the header pipes. There is a heat recovery system to preheat the water for the water heaters and furnaces.

  • Gaudet’s Electrical has installed most of the necessary conduits with a lot of wire to be pulled through them. Half the lights (22) have been installed over the surface.

  • SEACOR is installing the ice boards. They complete the posts and rough framing. Next is the white material on the ice side and the top for the boards. Then comes the glass and the netting up to the ceiling.

  • The Pavement in front of the building has been repaired. The road to the Zamboni Room still has to be constructed. Perry’s Construction still has some landscaping to complete.

  • Due to the lateness of our project it was decided to delay the installation of the elevator (although the pit and shaft are there) and the construction of the parking lot area that was leased from the Legion.

  • Red Isle Plumbing continues to be on schedule with the heating and washroom facilities.

  • MCM Bricklayers are almost done except for a wall around the stairway to the upper viewing room and around a door in the upper level.

  • The asphalt patching has been completed around the front of the Arena.

  • The cupboards for the canteen are being built.

  • November 12-

  • The Grand Opening is tentatively set for Saturday, January 13, 2007 which is Hockey Day in Canada on CBC. Tignish was selected as one of 5 locations across Canada where CBC will set up remote satellite transmissions to broadcast short segments from Tignish at various times throughout the day.

  • The canvassers will be campaigning again January 6th trying to raise more funds. We need approximately $270,000 more to meet our goal of $1,066,666. Check other areas of our website for more information on the Campaign.
